Greetings, By now you would have seen a few Yachtyakkas. A little bit of a taste of yachting from around the world and around the corner. In up coming issues you will read about one of this countries most innovative designers and from another designer one of this countries most enduring 22fters. I hope you have had a chance to visit crew.org, log on and enjoy the friendly banter. We know that our new registrations are climbing rapidly and if you do 10 posts you can get a bottle of Mount Gays finest. We have lots of plans for the future to spark up a few old salts, so enjoy a moment of yachting, before you do that other stuff you do today there is not a lot of reading, mostly pictures, so even my mate Logan can dream for five minutes.

Enjoy

My photography business is built on the principle of making quality digital images and delivering them to your door. My extensive portfolio continues to grow. I always have a camera with me, and I try to add new images to the site on a weekly basis. Please check back often to see what’s new in the gallery.

My unique knowledge in both the computer science field as well as photography has helped me develop a unique style. I don’t like to use photoshop as a crutch, but I do believe it’s needed to get the most out of any digital image. Each shot I take gets individualized processing in photoshop to get the best results.

Andrea Francolini Wot Rocket

Who will be first to 50Knots?

23 June 2008, update on Wot Rocket

The Wot Rocket team packed up at Kurnell last Friday following their most successful week of testing according to creator and pilot Sean Langman.

Another valuable finding came from Friday’s test sail, the crew of Langman and co-pilot Martin Thompson discovering that each time Wot Rocket’s pod went to lift out of the water, the pilot experienced difficulties steering.

The team realised that the rudder’s aluminium control rods were bending so this week those rods are being replaced with carbon fibre rods. The rudder is also being reshaped so it’s better balanced and doesn’t self-centre.

Thursday’s forecast is the most promising for the week with a 15-20 knot WNW breeze expected however Langman says “it will be a scramble to be ready by Thursday given the latest round of modifications”.

He believes a weekend test sail is more realistic but with the long rang forecast showing the breeze only hovering in the 10-12 knot range for both Saturday and Sunday, the prospect of Wot Rocket getting up on its foils, which is when supercavitation is expected to come into play, looks set to be deferred for another time.

“We are slowly clawing our way forward,” says Langman, who still has plenty of fire in his belly, particularly with the latest threat from the French to pip him to post in the race to break through 50 knots, the holy grail of sailing.

Speedboat takes line honours in Bermuda

Mike Sanderson, onboard Speedboat after finishing the Newport to Bermuda race:

"Well the goal at the first meeting to frame the concept of what the New "Speedboat" was going to be, and its objectives was always quite clearly defined as to a line honors win in the 2008 Newport Bermuda race, at just after 8 am this morning local Time we cruised across the line enabling us to tick that goal off, a 250 mile beat in between 7 and 10 knots of wind meant that the record was long gone, but as I mentioned yesterday the time to be able to test and play around with different modes upwind has been priceless.

"The boat has been faultless, a full credit to the big team back in Spain at Juan Yacht design that designed her, as well as the many thousands of hours that where put into her by the team here on Speedboat, Tom Faire and the guys at Cookson Boats, Matt Smeaton and his team at North sails NZ, Steve Wilson and the team at Southern Spars, Greg Waters and the crew at Central coast hydraulics as well as many other smaller teams and individuals that have all contributed so heavily to the speedboat program, it has been a pretty hectic 18 months since the trigger was pulled to go ahead.

"How we end up in the race on Handicap is now out of our hands, she was never designed with a handicap place in mind, but we will take any good results in that game when they come along, it will prove to be a race for the smaller boats I am pretty sure, from the forecasts it looks like there is a good chance that the fifty footers will come reaching in at pretty high speed, but only time will tell how that all works out.

"Now that we are here in one piece and the boat is all working well we can now firmly set our sights on being ready for a Trans Atlantic record attempt in July, let's hope that the wind gods shine favourably on us and we get a chance to have a crack, I have no doubt that should we get a reasonable window that we have the hardware to give it a great shot.

"So that's it for now from the 2008 Speedboat Newport to Bermuda race, it has been a great race to spend some quality race time on the yacht, a great race and opportunity to get 12 of the TEAMORIGIN team sailing together, but most importantly it has been a great couple of weeks building the Speedboat team, the feel on board is fantastic, all in all a great bunch of guys, but then I guess it was always going to be, Alex, Jane and the Jackson Girls are a lovely family to be around, what they have done here is so very cool, and I have no doubt that it will go from strength to strength. Until next time."
