The
club currently has a very strong centreboard section. It ranges from
our level one learn to sail
students in club optimists, through to
master Laser sailors, including the current NZ 12' skiff champion.
During the season racing is held on Wednesday evening for all
classes
whose skippers have achieved YNZ level 2 certification, and on Sundays
for all classes from green fleet level upwards.
Our sailors also have combined racing and coaching with Napier and
Tauranga clubs.

There
is a large amount of storage space for centreboard boats in the
club basement, and the storage bunker next to the club, all at very
reasonable rates.

Learn

Go To Coaching

LTYC run very
successful Learn To Sail programmes from which many champions have
started
their sailing careers.
What Is Learn To Sail?
The Learn to Sail
course is a structured program, which is designed to enable those
participating
to achieve their Yachting New Zealand Learn To Sail Level One
Certificate. The
Learn to Sail program is a series of
weekly lessons run under the direction of the Centreboard Coordinator
and
Yachting New Zealand qualified instructors.
There will be a moderate fee for the course. Membership of the club for
the duration of
the course is included as part of the course fee.
How Old Do I Have To Be?
Nine years is the
minimum age. The child must be able to swim 25 metres without a life
vest and
feel comfortable in the water, as they may be required to capsize their
boat as
part of the syllabus.
What Equipment Will I Need?
You will need your
own life jacket and warm clothing.
The
Club provides Optimist learner boats for the Learn To Sail programme. You only need to buy a
boat once you have
learned the essentials and have decided to pursue the sport.
Where Do I Find A Boat?
Have a look at our
Boats for Sale for the latest listings, the club notice board, Trade
Me, or Sail One. You can buy a beginner boat for around $500.
How Often Do We Have to Come and how long Does
It Take?
The courses are
held in summer on Monday or Tuesday evenings at Lake Taupo Yacht Club,
starting
at 5.00 pm, and finishing approximately 7.00pm.
Will My Child Be Well Supervised And Safe?
Yes, we adhere to
the coaching ratios stipulated by Yachting New Zealand. There are
always
inflatable boats on the water manned by club members whenever the
children are
sailing, and they are carefully supervised.

Coaching
is part of any sailor’s progression after Learn to
Sail. Lake Taupo
Yacht Club offers
coaching to suit the needs of the members as they develop. As such, the coaching
programmes offered will
vary from season to season, and will be dependent on the availability
of
Yachting New Zealand trained coaches.
Register
your interest and ask when the coaching sessions
will happen. Pass
your email address and
phone number to the Coaching Coordinator.
Be
prepared to share the costs of coaching with other
parents. If the
coach is a club member,
the coaching may be free. But
generally
you are paying for coaching and you can expect a coach to charge
between $80
and $200 per day, depending on the level of the coach.
If the coach is coaching a group of sailors,
it is normal for the cost to be split between the sailors, i.e. one
coach at
$200 per day between 5 sailors = $40 per sailor.
If coaches have to travel from out of town,
their travel and accommodation costs will usually have to be split
among the
sailors as well.
If you
want 1 on 1 coaching, expect to pay between $15p/h -
$30 p/h.
Coaching
is a necessary component to improving.
Paying for a good quality coach means you can
be assured the right skills will be taught the right way.
It
is important that parents leave the coaching to the
coaches and maintain their role as a support person.
–
Parental Support
- Off Water
There is more than enough that you can
assist with that does
not duplicate what the coaches are doing that will make a real
difference. Encourage
your child to read the right books,
advising on diet, fitness and general organisational abilities. Your task is to get hold
of the books either
by purchase or from your local library.
Read the same books yourself and discuss the
contents when you have both
finished the same book with a view to implementing lifestyle changes.
You can
gradually help him/her to take over more and more of
the organisational side of things, starting with packing gear against a
checklist. Then you
can introduce
him/her to maintenance, menu planning, getting regatta information off
the
Yachting New Zealand website, or indeed anything else he/she shows an
interest
in.
The point
about all of this is to teach your child
organisational skills that will be useful to them in other parts of
their
lives.
- On Water
Coaches
prefer their own space, so
as to avoid distraction to both themselves and the sailors. However
when
appropriate being on a support boat within ear shot of the coaching is
often
very rewarding, not only in learning drills and techniques yourself but
in
seeing the sailors improve both in skill level and confidence.
