Give it a Go Day a Big Hit at Lake Taupō Yacht Club
Curious about sailing? In April, Lake Taupō Yacht Club opened its doors for a “Give it a Go” day — and the response was fantastic. With 25 people turning up, families from across the community came down to experience life on the water in a fun, relaxed environment.

The day was all about getting involved. Guests were paired with experienced club members and encouraged to jump onboard, take the helm, and see what sailing is all about — no pressure, just plenty of encouragement and fresh lake air.
For many, it was a chance to discover something new together as a family. One parent shared how special it was to watch their kids take charge: seeing them focus, work as a team, and confidently handle the boat was a real highlight. Another family described the club as welcoming and friendly, noting how quickly they were out on the water and part of the action.
Several attendees were surprised by the club’s facilities and the number of boats available, making sailing more accessible than they’d expected. Even better, the kids loved it — with plenty of smiles and “awesome time” feedback all round.
The “Give it a Go” day is designed as a first step, offering a taste of sailing before committing to the club’s Learn to Sail programme, which kicks off in October 2026.
