Shiver Me Timbers! Pirates Plunder the Lake

The shores of Lake Taupō Yacht Club were overrun by pirates this Waitangi Day as our annual Pirate Regatta delivered a swashbuckling spectacle both on and off the water.

From the moment crews mustered at the club, the transformation was complete. Fearsome captains, rogue deckhands, and some rather convincing scallywags rigged their vessels under clear skies, ready to claim glory (and perhaps a little mischief). Judging by the remarkable turnout, piracy is alive and well in Taupō — and one can’t help but wonder what these characters do in their day jobs!

By mid-morning, a colourful fleet set sail across the lake, bound for adventure. Sails dotted the water as crews navigated their way toward Acacia Bay South Boat Ramp for a well-earned BBQ lunch.

Ashore, the spirit of friendly rivalry continued with team games, laughter, and plenty of pirate antics. Pool noodles became swords, dockside banter flowed freely, and the next generation of sailors embraced the day with wide-eyed enthusiasm (fizzy drinks in hand, of course).

A huge thank you to our volunteers, safety boat drivers, BBQ legends, and organisers who ensured no pirate was left behind and all returned safely to port.

Waitangi Day at the Lake Taupō Yacht Club has once again proven that sailing is as much about community as it is about wind and water.

Until next year — keep those cutlasses sharp and your sails ready.
