Strong Home Regatta for LTYC Sailors at Taupō Centreboard Regatta
Lake Taupō Yacht Club hosted a successful LTYC Centreboard Regatta, with its sailors making the most of home waters to deliver a series of strong performances across the Optimist and Starling fleets.
In the Optimist White fleet, Sammy Corcoran finished 5th overall in a highly competitive 19-boat fleet. Sammy showed excellent starting speed throughout the regatta—crediting some helpful pre-event advice from Mia—and consistently put himself in the leading group. He was leading Race 5 before an unfortunate capsize, and bounced back with a superb sail in Race 6, crossing the line first (pending a scoring correction following a protest outcome). It was a regatta that highlighted both his growing racecraft and resilience.
In the Optimist Green fleet, Eddie Corcoran enjoyed a fantastic and consistent series to finish 6th overall in a fleet of nine. His regatta included a 3rd place in Race 1, followed by a string of steady results, typically finishing in the 6–7 range. Just as importantly, Eddie sailed the entire weekend with a smile—reportedly singing and whistling his way around the course—a great reflection of both confidence and enjoyment at this stage of his sailing.
Also in Green Fleet, Caitlin Attwell delivered a solid performance to finish 5th overall, showing consistency across all races and staying competitive throughout the series.
In the Optimist Open fleet, Aidan Church represented LTYC in a strong 22-boat fleet. Despite some challenging races, Aidan gained valuable experience competing against some of the top sailors in the region.
The Starling fleet saw good LTYC representation, with Hugo Brasell finishing 7th overall, while Christopher Hancock (8th), Patrick Hancock (9th), and Amy Holdsworth (12th) all completed the regatta with consistent performances across the series.
Across the fleets, the regatta showcased the depth of sailing at LTYC, from Green Fleet sailors building confidence through to more experienced racers competing at the front of their fleets. With strong performances, visible progression, and plenty of enjoyment on the water, it was a highly successful weekend for the club.
